Lane Kiffin Tops LSU’s Wish List After Brian Kelly Firing — Could Florida or Penn State Lure Him Away?

Lane Kiffin is our top target. You can just insert the name of the school that needs a new football coach, and the statement rings true. Add LSU to the list after Brian Kelly was fired a little more than halfway through his fourth season in Baton Rouge. The school will pay him $54 million to go away despite a 34-14 record at LSU. Fans were simply not behind the direction the program was heading. LSU entered the season with national title hopes, just like every other year, but were not even close to sniffing the playoffs after a miserable loss on their home field at the hands of Texas A&M. LSU feels like they can compete with anyone in football, and now they will have to for their next head coach. Lane Kiffin is a wanted man, wanted by Penn State, LSU, and of course, the Florida Gators.

What should, and what will Lane Kiffin do? He is certainly about to get a huge pay day no matter what his choice is. He could stay at Ole Miss where he has been a huge success, going 40-17 at a school not exactly known for stellar football teams.  He has used the transfer portal profusely, bringing in players from around the country to help bolster high school recruiting that has been ranked in the middle of the pack in the SEC. Ole Miss went on the road this week and put 34 points on Oklahoma, who had the highest ranked defense in the nation coming into Saturday’s games. This is the exact kind of high-flying offense the Gators want in Gainesville and are likely ready to open the vault to pay Kiffin. Kiffin even has Florida ties, having grown up in the Tampa area while his father, Monte Kiffin was the vaunted defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for years. This is the man Florida wants, but they have to get in line with other schools.

LSU feels like they can lure Kiffin to Baton Rouge. What they have to offer is the only major school in a state that produces a lot of top football prospects. They are willing to pay, as evidenced by how much they gave Kelly both to coach, then to go away. The school has also shown they are willing to put down money for NIL to bring in both recruits and transfers, something that is a must in today’s college football. Would it be a better gig than Florida? It seems like the jobs are fairly equal, but there is a lot less attention on other matters in the state of Louisiana, especially while the Saints are awful. In Florida, Florida State and Miami constantly battle with the Gators for recruits, and in the major markets that make up the state, professional teams take up a lot of attention.

If either school plans to back up the Brinks truck, beware. Kiffin told the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN Monday, “I have never made a decision based on money, nor will I,” Kiffin said. “… I’ve seen too many examples in life that money does not buy happiness, so I’m never going to make a decision based on money. Nor do I care about it.” Are you listening Penn State? Their path to the playoffs might be easier than that at Florida or LSU, and they certainly plan to pay their next head coach as much or more than other schools. In the interim, Kiffin will continue his march to the playoffs with Ole Miss as the schedule gets much easier the rest of the way.
