Orlando Storm look to bounce back

The UFL's Orlando Storm

The Orlando Storm are once again making a push to bring new fans to Inter & Co Stadium as they prepare to take on the Birmingham Stallions for the second time this season. The Storm is coming off a 25-17 loss to St. Louis at home, but don’t be mistaken, the UFL debut team is 4-1, and Coach Anthony Becht knows what that means. “Our record is what it is. We are in first place.”

While his main job has been coaching a football team, Becht has been somewhat of a salesman as well, constantly asking fans to give them a look, complimenting the more than 9,000 that showed up for the team’s third home game. “I heard them. They were awesome to see, and they’ve got to keep coming. We are an awesome ass team.”

Becht has emphasized winning as the best way to attract fans. “I am passionate about getting that place to capacity where it needs to be because we are going to continue to fight our tails off and make this team great.”

The story lines have been compelling as well. In their first loss, the Storm trailed 25-0 at halftime, only to come roaring back to within one score. “Whatever we did in the second half, that’s us,” Coach Becht told Pulp City in his weekly Zoom meeting. “Vibes are great. Guys are great. I can’t wait to see what our response is,” adding that he thinks the loss will help his team focus.

In comes Birmingham, a team the Storm blanked 16-0 just two weeks ago. “We’d be silly to think that they are not a pissed-off bunch going into this football game,” Becht said, knowing it was the first time a team had been shut out since 2024.

Even juicier, right before that last game but not early enough for him to see the field, the Storm traded Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson to Birmingham as the Stallions try to save their season. “He was such a good teammate when we had them, and obviously, he is a really good player. That’s why they traded for him,” Storm Quarterback Jack Plummer told the media in his availability this week. “DTR,” as he is known around the UFL to shorten up the three-word name, will come in with a big desire to beat his former team.

So far, the crowds have left much to desire in numbers but not in enthusiasm, something Plummer and his teammates have noticed. “It’s great to have the fan support.” At the same time, can a franchise survive in Orlando, or in any city where the UFL is trying to gain a foothold, with only 10,000 fans per game? For Plummer, like his coach, the answer lies in victories.  “Hopefully, as the season goes on and we keep winning games, we can draw an even bigger buzz to get people to come out and support us.”

Commemorative coins will be handed out to the first 5,000 fans this week, with a special emphasis on attracting families. A ticket package for four includes hot dogs, drinks, and popcorn. There are also deals for students, first responders, teachers, and healthcare workers. Learn more here. https://www.theufl.com/orlando-ticket-packages-promos.

Kickoff is Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m., at Inter & Co stadium.

There are just two home games left in the season, and the team wants to be here a long time. It may be up to you.
