Bad Santa & The Angry Elves Go to Edinburgh

When it comes to live music, Orlando has no shortage of what it brings to the stage. With such a vast diversity of bands, you’d be hard-pressed to find a genre of music that isn’t represented — and very few are as beloved as Bad Santa & The Angry Elves.

Over the years, seeing a Bad Santa show has become something of a tradition in Orlando: a chaotic Christmas rumpus where classic rock songs get twisted into loud, theatrical holiday anthems.

My first Bad Santa experience was at Iron Cow in the Milk District, more than six years ago. When I moved back from Chicago, they were the first band I saw. I remember looking around the room almost as much as I watched the stage. People weren’t just static, standing there nodding along — they were part of the show: singing, shouting, laughing, throwing themselves into the yuletide mayhem like they’d been waiting all year to let loose.

Immediately, my love affair with Orlando and its music scene was rekindled.

From Orlando Tradition to International Stage

Now that world, and all of its tinsel and brouhaha, is heading overseas. Bad Santa & The Angry Elves have officially been accepted into the 2026 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, one of the largest and most influential arts festivals in the world.

The festival traces its roots back to 1947, when eight uninvited theatre groups arrived in Edinburgh and staged performances outside the official Edinburgh International Festival, an act of artistic independence that gave birth to what would become the Fringe. Now entering its 79th year, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival featured nearly 3,900 shows last year, with 62 countries represented — a massive global stage for artists, performers, musicians, and storytellers of every kind.

For Bad Santa frontman Christian Kelty, the opportunity represents far more than simply playing another show. “Being able to immerse ourselves in that environment, constantly something extraordinary to see, people from every corner of the planet to meet, the whole overwhelming, beautiful vibe of Edinburgh, Scotland, it’s inspiring on every level,” he said. “But personally? To be able to fly over there with my elves, and give our gift, share a message — that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And we do not take it lightly.”

Will's Pub Orlando Live Music Venue

For years, Bad Santa has occupied a unique lane within Orlando’s music scene. On the surface, the concept sounds like a comedy bit: transforming classic rock songs into high-energy Christmas anthems performed by a band of elves led by Kris Kringle IV, the fourth son of Santa Claus.

Still, reducing the band to parody entirely misses the point. What makes Bad Santa work isn’t just the obvious wink — it’s the commitment to the world they’ve created, and it’s true musicianship. Members of the band come from deep within Orlando’s music scene, and each member approaches the project as both a musician and a performance artist. The result is something wildly theatrical without losing the raw energy of a live rock ‘n’ roll show, and beneath all the humor, mythology, and chaos, there’s something simple and sincere at its core.

“I think there is a subliminal connection between Christmas and rock ‘n’ roll that goes deeper than people realize,” Kelty said. “They are two things that, when we were younger, we absolutely believed in before the world told us not to believe anymore. When you put them together, something in people remembers. Something wakes back up.”

That connection is part of why the band has built such a loyal following locally.

“If you’re there to rock out — we’ve got you. If you need some Christmas magic — we’ve got you. If you’re there to hear the gospel — we’ve got you,” Kelty added. “Whatever you came looking for, something in the room is going to find you.”

Orlando Is Part of the Story

The band’s mythology may be rooted in the North Pole, but according to Kelty, Orlando is inseparable from the story they’re telling.

“This town is a main character in the tale,” he said. “We carry the heart and soul of the Orlando music scene with us. We carry every person who has come to our shows, come back year after year, brought their friends and family. They are the reason we keep delivering the message.”

That message is simple: “Christmas every day. Kindness, generosity, joy. Don’t be a dick.”

 The Road to Edinburgh

Getting to Edinburgh, however, takes more than holiday magic, and that road hasn’t been without its challenges. The band found itself scrambling to replace their bassist — lore and all — in a last-minute shake-up. For Bad Santa, it was just another obstacle on the way to delivering the message.

Like many independent artists making international moves, the band’s trip is largely self-funded, requiring them to raise money for travel, housing, promotion, and the logistics of being overseas during the festival’s month-long run.

Still, Kelty says the response from Orlando has already exceeded anything they expected.

“The response we’ve gotten from people who know we’re going over has been nothing short of miraculous,” he said. “Everybody is rooting for us. There are people who have already bought airline tickets to join us in Edinburgh. That is wild to me. That is everything.”

Moments like this matter for a city often underestimated culturally.  A strange, theatrical Christmas rock band that was banished from the North Pole and took root in Orlando is about to step onto one of the biggest arts stages in the world, carrying with it the energy of the city that built it.

Christmas every day. Kindness, generosity, joy, not being a dick. That’s Orlando’s gift to you, Edinburgh.

Ho. Ho. Ho.
