Florida Gators 2025 Football Preview: DJ Lagway, SEC Hopes & Questions

Big expectations for the Florida Gators this year, or a sense of doom and gloom with a Head Coach on the hot seat? It could be both in Gainesville as the Gators get ready for the 2025 football season.

Stoking the fire of expectation is the blazing finish by the Gators last season. They beat LSU, Ole Miss, and Florida State resoundingly down the stretch, proving that with a healthy roster, they have the ability to become a force again in the SEC. The hopes of Gator fans coming into the 2025 season rest on the surgically repaired right shoulder of Quarterback DJ Lagway. Lagway was the top QB recruit in the nation before arriving in Gainesville and certainly looked the part after taking over for injured starter Graham Mertz. Lagway went 6-1 as Florida’s starter last season, and if healthy will be a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2025. The problem is he has not been healthy much during his short time at UF. Lagway missed action in a loss to Georgia where Florida was competitive before he left the game, then Gators were beaten soundly by Texas with their 3rd string quarterback at the helm. Already as training camp starts, Lagway began in a walking boot, an ominous sign.

If Florida turns to a backup, expectations will certainly be revised. Harrison Bailey transferred in from Louisville and performed well in the Spring game, but won’t be expected to lead the Gators to the Playoffs if he is forced into multiple starts. They also have Aidan Warner back, but the Winter Park HS star proved he was not ready last season in the 2nd half against Georgia, and a two interception performance in a blowout loss at Texas.

The Gators look pretty stacked at the skill positions where Sophomore JD Baugh and Senior Ja’Kobi Jackson return in the backfield. The outlook is even better at wide receiver. Boone HS star Aidan Mizell and Tampa’s Eugene Wilson blew up as true freshman last season and are ready to take the next step. Joining them this year is acclaimed recruit Dallas Wilson, who caught 10 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game, and UCLA transfer J Michael Studivant.

On the defensive side of the ball, there is talent, but will there be enough depth? UF is hoping for big things from transfer cornerback Cormani McClain. He was the top recruit at his position in 2024 and transfers in after a season at Colorado. The Gators have talent at multiple positions, led by Senior edge rusher Tyreak Sapp. In order to be successful, they will have to be able to get to the quarterback with pressure to help the secondary.

The schedule again is among the most difficult in the nation which is to be expected with 8 SEC games and Miami and Florida State in the out of conference slate. It’s year 4 for Head Coach Billy Napier, and the most critical one of his career. Can his team continue to improve, make the most of having a generational quarterback in Gainesville, and become a playoff contender? If not, Napier will be looking over his shoulder and change could come again to a proud team and fanbase.
